Facts about Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario.
Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs):
- Complete competency-based education of two to three years at Government of Ontario recognized institutions
- Must study anatomy, physiology, pathology, physical assessment, neurology, treatments, ethics and other health related subjects.
- Complete a minimum of 150 clinical hours at an accredited educational institution.
- Are examined and registered by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act and the Massage Therapy Act.
Only members of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario are permitted to use the title Massage Therapist.
Registered Massage Therapists are issued a registration number which is shown on their membership certificate and identification card.
Massage Therapy is the assessment and manipulation of soft tissues of the body, specifically the muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage can relieve pain from every day stress and aid muscular overuse or chronic pain syndromes that result from injury or trauma.
Massage Therapy is known for its restorative, therapeutic and deeply relaxing benefits. Massage flushes toxins, reduces stress, improves sleep, enhances digestion, increases energy levels, oxygenates organs and skin and rejuvenates the whole body.
Massage Therapy is indicated for migraine and muscle tension headaches, back, neck and shoulder pain, stiff and sore muscles from injuries or postural stressors, stress and depression.

Swedish Massage is a hands on technique performed by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Your personalized treatment plan will be based on an initial assessment and your health history including a variety of tests to establish the condition of your muscles and joints. You and your RMT will establish a program to fit your situation and your lifestyle.
Massage Therapy can enhance an individual's overall sense of emotional and physical well-being and quality of life. Treatments can be determined on an individualized basis.
For chronic conditions, Massage Therapy is most beneficial when used over a series of treatments and then followed up with maintenance and/or preventive treatments.
